We recieved this email with film suggestions from Manchester Shark Action:
We would like to show the documentary Sharkwater and
were wondering if the Manchester Film Co-operative
might like to show it in the future? It is a
fantastic expose of the international and illegal
shark finning trade which kills 100,000,000 sharks a
year, resulting in the definite possibility of
extinction for many shark species in the near future.
See http://www.sharkwater.com for more information about the
film.
We have permission from the producers of the film to
show it and feel that this would be a fantastic
opportunity for us to promote our group and its
activities, raise awareness of the issues that are
damaging our oceans and the creatures within it and
also to give us a chance to discuss the film
afterwards with people who may not have known about
the issue before.
What do you think?

| Mmm, I think 100,000,000 sharks a year is probably an exageration. Otherwise extinction might have happened already. |

| it does sound like a miss-print in the order of a few extra zeros but it's still sounds like a dangerous practice and an interesting film. |

No it's true, it is estmated by marine specialists that 100 million sharks are killed every year, some for their fins, some as bycatch when other species are targeted, so the sharks are thrown dead back into the water. Shocking but true. Some species are now threatened with extinction and are red-listed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (the world’s oldest and largest global environmental network). Manchester Shark Action is meeting soon to discuss our activities this year and will be in touch soon to see if you would like us to show this film.
